How do I join random-width lumber?

I need 1/2" thick lumber for a project that I am doing, but the only ones I could find were random-width, 3" to 9". My problem is that I need the width to be 12". How do I join these edge-to-edge to make it 12"? Note that I'm a newbie, so my entire premise might be incorrect.
