Why did they change the name of the first Harry Potter book...?

In parts of the world like England, they have it as philosopher. In parts like Canada and America, you'll see it as sorcerer. This is because, well, they didn't think that people would know what a philosopher was. I got this from a credible source, AKA my English teacher who is "up there" in status. She received a book as a gift for all her work a year before its release date. But yes, Xenon, just to confirm, it is because they didn't think people in other parts would know what a philosopher was.
