Cats eyes are always goopy... doesn't have eye infection.?

My cats eyes are always goopy, and it's not an infection. He had an extra flap of skin over his eye when he was born, and it was mostly removed when I had him fixed. It's just that it's still partially there and dust and hair and lint gets caught in it a lot. I've taken him to the vet and they've always said it's just goop...no infection. They give me cream to use, but w/no infection it seems silly to spend 100+ bucks for eye cream. Is there any I can get from a pet store?
