Its already been done. And mutual funds dont do it. There are restrictions on how much a mutual fund can own of a particular company. You have a lot of competition with deep pockets and their backers with deeper pockets for all the legal and accounting expenses involved, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Blackstone, Goldman Saches, Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn and others and companies themselves seeking to merge with another. Large institutional investors form funds all the time for this exact purpose.
